Have i done the right thing ?

It doesn't sound like you guys are close.. or friends even? Probably would of just left the situation alone. Everyone in their right mind SHOULD know the laws of the land. So if in your country it is a crime. They should already be aware or get some awareness! Oh btw what country is this, you speak of??
